Broken Eggs in Blue

Remember how I said I wouldn't be updating for awhile? Yeah, I'm full of it.

At any rate, I finally got a picture of my painting today-- you know, the one that actually sold for $45! My first work to bring in money! Yes, I know the photo quality isn't that great, but using a 70-pixel-per-inch digital camera in an artroom full of fluorescent lights to snap an oil painting does not bring lovely results. It looks much better in person, of course.

I just can't seem to get away from my anime roots. I know, I know, "What the heck does this have to do with anime?" Well, I made an attempt at cel-shading. Everyone else was blending flawless gradients, and I just couldn't. Even when I pulled it off, I just didn't like the way it looked. I took a much more regional approach to the color areas; they're extremely defined on the more-lit sides, with the gradation happening only toward the darker shadows. I really like the way it came out; the lit edges contrasting to the shadowed sides look pretty good, especially considering that this was my first foray into oil paint ever.

The subject was a grouping of plaster-of-Paris eggs made by filling a balloon with plaster, blowing up and tying off the balloon, and keeping it in motion to evenly coat the inside of the balloon.
Done in Utrecht oils, Phthalo Blue and Titanium White.
